SURGE2022

Basic Programming & OrBot

OrBOT

What is this workshop?
The workshop is aimed to learn how robots work. What sensors & actuators are and how they are used to make decisions. Participants will assemble & build a Robot Car that can be controlled with a remote control and/or an iOS app. The fully assembled car can be used as a platform for future workshops to add more features.

Who is it for?
Although participant of any age can enjoy the workshop, we recommend that a participant above age 10 would greatly enjoy and understand.

What will you do?
Participant will be provided a kit and assembly instructions. An instructor will explain & walk through the assembly process with explanation of each component. Participants will test the functions along the process. At the end of the workshop, you will have a full functional remote car that participants can play with and use it to learn more either on their own or from our future workshops.

What will you learn?
Participants will learn sensors & actuators and how to integrate them to make decisions. Participants will also learn basics of programming with a graphical programming language.

What do you need?
Although you will be provided with a full functional & pre-programmed kit, to enhance the learning experience, we suggest you bring your laptop. The car can be controlled with a remote provided in the kit. However, to enjoy playing with the car, an iOS App can be used to control. So an iOS device to download the APP, is highly recommended.

When? Where? How much?
The workshop will be conducted in person & virtually at the same time on Saturday July 16th. The location for local (Quad Cities) participants will be provided as we get closer.
The cost of workshop for each participant is $120 with one car kit. Two participants from same family can join as a group for $150, however they both will share one car kit.

What happens after the workshop?
During the workshop the participants, will build a full functional car with provided sensors and actuators (motors). Participants can use this as a base for our future workshops to add more advanced features.

There will be follow-along kits to do hands-on experiments, these kits will include components to perform experiments during the sessionS as well as help participants to build mini science projects.

Date: Saturday July 16th
Venue: Will be announced closer to workshop date.
Cost: $120 for participant with complete kit or $150 for two participants from one family with one complete kit.
Duration: 4-6 Hours
Kits Pickup: 2 weeks prior to workshop
